My inspiration for the Shinsaver came one random afternoon after I’d had enough of cracking my shin on the metal towbar.
We were on a family vacation over Easter weekend, camping riverside in the Kangaroo Valley, just south of Sydney. With all the moving around and unloading, I’d wacked my leg on the edge of the towbar three times. I was in pain, and I was fed up.
When we returned from the trip, I’d hit every auto shop and motor supply store in Sydney, looking for some type of covering to protect myself from the towbar. To my disappointment, there wasn’t anything on the market. I decided there was nothing left to do but design it myself.
I have a background in toolmaking and injection moulding, which ultimately proved essential to creating the perfect solution to my problem. My design started with Cad Cam design drafting and a simple block of wood. Once the design was drafted, I carved the wood into the perfect shape to cap and cover the towbar and ball.
I knew I was onto something useful and worthwhile, so I filed for a design patent. It was assigned design patent No. 125299, and is currently registered. Finally, all it took was to create an injection moulding die, and get the whole thing into production. We’ve continued selling this iconic product for the past 12 years.
